Cupcake Sauvignon Blanc Review from Marlborough Valley (South Island), New Zealand

Vintage: 2014

Well first of all, cheers to quality Aussy (well, kind of) wine!  The 2014 Cupcake Sauvignon Blanc came from a world away to make it to my glass, and my all time favorite country did not disappoint with this vintage.  This is a great summer sipper — very refreshing.  The Cupcake Sauvignon Blanc 2014 is a well balanced, refreshing and well priced wine loaded with fresh citrus and tree fruit.  This Sauvignon Blanc is uniquely complex for its price point, and that”s because the Sauvignon Blanc grapes at the Cupcake Vineyard in the Marlborough Valley develop more slowly thanks to a cooler climate.  This ultimately allows the grapes to achieve more complexity by the time of harvest.

Cupcake Sauvignon Blanc Tasting Notes

In the glass, the Cupcake Sauv has a good looking light key-lime, lemon and melon hue to it.  The nose of the wine speaks lemon zest, backed by ever subtle hints of apricot and gooseberry.  On the open, we get a well balanced tree and citrus fruit forward kick, displaying notes of key-lime, lemon peel and peaches.  The middle palate gets a bit brighter, bringing out additional complexities, refreshing lemon-lime and cold but light minerals.  Towards the close, the Cupcake Sauvignon Blanc stays superbly balanced, supple and fresh.  Expect a thoroughly enjoyable melon-esque and key-lime custard medium finish and aftertaste.

Cupcake Sauvignon Blanc Food Pairings

SUSHI is hands down my favorite meal to pair this wine with.  It yearns to be paired with fish (particularly whitefish) — shellfish too.  Chilean seabass is ideal pan seared or grilled.  Try braising in lemon, olive oil and even Cupcake Sauv.  Try this Sauvignon Blanc with oyster shooters, striped bass or four-cheese risotto for additional compliments.   Honey crusted chicken or even caesar salad work quite nicely as well.
