Altovinum Evodia Garnacha Review from Calatayud, Spain
One of the more drinkable, great value Garnacha’s (Grenache) I’ve come across in recent years. Evodia can be found at most major grocery and liquor stores across the United States (I found Evodia at Whole Foods for $9.99, though it can be found for as little as $6.99 at Costco). This is a superb, medium bodied, 100% old-vine Garnacha wine from one of the finest Garnacha producing regions in the world, Calatayud. Famed sommelier Robert Parker gave the 2013 Evodia vintage 89 points.
Evodia Garnacha Review
As is often the case with Garnacha, Evodia is a medium bodied wine that isn’t intensely tannic. This alone increases its drinkability, but if you add the aromatic and mineral nature of this wine, bursting with floral and dark blue fruit notes — it’s incredibly seductive. The Garnacha grapes used to produce Evodia are grown at elevation (above 800 meters) in slate-rich soil, which adds a cold minerality to the wine. Partly because the vines used to produce this wine are so old (some over 100 years), it’s not blended with other varieties like many Garnacha’s typically are. A distinct freshness is very noticeable in Evodia, and its able to be drank while very young.
Evodia Garnacha Tasting Notes
On the nose, expect immediate hints of strawberry and rich plum. The opening palate kicks with pleasant acidity, raspberry and lush cherry and mild cracked red pepper. Mid-palate the structure of the wine evolves, beginning to give off its slate and mineral tones. Soft and light tannins backed with undertones of violet linger on the tongue along with some blueberry notes. The finish is medium, with blackberry, light herb, smoke and cola all hanging onto a wet slate minerality.
The 2013 Evodia Garnacha is tanked for 5 months in steel, which really allows the old-vine grapes to reveal their true nature. No oak is needed here.
