Pedernales Wines 2012 GSM Red Wine Blend from Stonewall, Texas.
This past weekend I made the beautiful drive with a few friends through Texas Hill Country to Stonewall, TX. Situated on slight elevation, Stonewall is home to the gorgeous, award winning vineyard dubbed Pedernales Cellars. The stunning patio outside their tasting room offers 360 degree views of the surrounding hill country which took my breath away. They’re known for developing beautiful Rhone-style blends from their multiple growing locations in hill country.
I decided to taste a variety of their red blends, but there was one that stood out impeccably over the others. That would be Pedernales 2012 GSM red wine blend. 2012 is the 5th year Pedernales has been producing their GSM, which stands for Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre – the three grape varietals blended to make this wine. (54% Syrah, 32% Mourvedre, and 14% Grenache)
Initial aromas of mellow strawberry and light cacao permeate the olfactory sense immediately. On the opening palate, I can only describe the texture of the GSM 2012 as velvety. A light, yet rich and dry follow overwhelms the mid palate with flavors of blueberry, cherry and spice as the delectable tannin structure continues to reveal itself. As the finish approaches, the wine stays superbly balanced and medium bodied, closing with black cherry and hints of chocolate.
Minimal rainfall throughout the hill country region in past years has produced low yields and offered tough growing conditions throughout the various terroirs. Texas wine makers have to be innovative if they want to be successful, and Pedernales Wines did not disappoint with the GSM red wine blend in 2012.
Pedernales Cellars GSM and other wines can be purchased at a variety of locations throughout Texas. Select liquor stores may carry the GSM, and it’s also for sale at Whole Foods stores and Specs in Austin, San Antonio, Dallas, and Houston. Pedernales Cellars wines can also be purchased online through their wine club.
