As we continue our reviews of the best value wines on the market this week, the Yellow Tail Pinot Grigio comes in at #2 on our list of best white wines for under five dollars. Crafted by Casella Wines, the Yellow Tail Pinot Grigio begins its life as a conglomeration of wee grape vines sitting in the sun on the plains of South Eastern Australia.
In the glass, this wine holds a subtle gray and mildly yellow hue — giving off immediate indications that it’s a dry and fruit-forward white wine. On the nose, we get fresh scents of pear and yellow apple, backed by undertones of honey. On the opening palate, this Pinot is vibrant with light yet crisp acidity, ripe pear and green apple. Mid-palate the wine stays fresh, adding very mild minerality while maintaing refreshing acid, lemon peel and melon. Approaching the close, spring daffodils and tulips pop alongside melon, pear and grapefruit — all culminating in a medium well balanced finish. Overall, the Yellow Tail Pinot Grigio is a bright, smooth and very drinkable wine. It’s fruit-forward and straight-forward — as in you know what you’re getting, and most vintages are relatively consistent. Highly recommend chilling this wine to around 52 degrees Fahrenheit.

Food Pairings with the Yellow Tail Pinot
This is your typical tree-fruit forward value Pinot Grigio. What that means is it will easily pair well with most white fish and white meat dishes, as well as any range of Italian style pastas. I personally like drinking it alongside potato crusted cod, gnocchi or parmesan risotto.
Where Can I Buy Yellow Tail Pinot Grigio?
Yellow Tail is a very popular wine in the United States. It’s incredibly accessible, and can almost always be found for around $ 5 if you look in the right places. The right places are basically your neighborhood grocery or liquor store. You can also order it online at Wine.com and have it delivered. I keep this type of wine in stock in my cellar for summer boat parties.
