Chase British Airways Visa Card Review – 100,000 Bonus Point Signup Offer
Every year, both Chase and British Airways team up to offer new credit card holders the opportunity to earn up to 100k points with the British Airways Visa Card. These 100k points (miles) are actually dubbed Avios. Another term used to describe British Airways’ version of reward points.
This is an incredibly lucrative signup bonus and it’s actually the highest on the market. The full 100k bonus can potentially earn you multiple round trip flights from the US to Europe – depending on award availability.
While this in and of itself is valuable, Avios awards are based on distance. You’ll actually get more value when flying domestically and through OneWorld partners, rather than directly on British Airways flights (more on that below).
This particular credit card offer is a bit different from the years before in that the requirements to earn the full 100,000 Avios have changed a bit. Note that you’ll need excellent credit in order to be eligible to apply for the 100k British Airways Visa card.
How to Earn 100k Miles with the British Airways Card
Getting the full 100k signup bonus is essentially done in steps. You’ll secure yourself 50,000 Avios once you spend $2,000 on purchases in the first three months of having your new card.
You can then earn an additional 25,000 Avios after you spend $10,000 in your first year, or 50,000 bonus Avios once you spend $20,000 on the card in your first year.
According to Chase, customers who have received a signup bonus with the British Airways Visa in the past 2 years will not be eligible.
British Airways card holders will earn 3 Avios miles for every dollar spent on British Airways related purchases. Separately, card holders will earn 1 Avios for every dollar spent on any other kind of purchase.
While the 1o0k British Airways Visa card does have a $95 annual fee, this credit card has several other great perks aside from the signup bonus that make it worth while.
Note that if you’re approved for the 100k British Airways offer, you’ll automatically be enrolled into their rewards program – the British Airways Executive Club.
Earn a Travel Together Ticket
Cardmembers who spend over $30,000 per year on their new British Airways cards can net themselves a “Travel Together Ticket.” Bring along a friend or spouse with you on your next award booking with Avios on a British Airways flight. The Travel Together Ticket is good for two years, and it’s only for companions traveling on the same flight as you. Your companion must also be in the same cabin as you, on flights that leave from the US and ultimately return to the US.
Note that you will still need to pay various taxes and fees for both your own ticket as well as your companion. In all honesty, this benefit isn’t exceptionally lucrative, given that taxes and fees can total over $600 for economy bookings per person. In some cases these fees can exceed $1200 for business class travel.
Travel Together Tickets are only valid on BA flights.
No Foreign Transaction Fees
The British Airways Visa card offers no foreign transaction fees and is also chip enabled. This enhances security with the product while also making payments easier in many countries outside of the US.
More European places of business offer chip-enabled card readers than businesses in the United States.
It’s a Visa Card
The 100k British Airways card is a Visa product, making it a versatile product usable for purchases at most places of business around the world.
Spend British Airways Avios Points with Multiple Airlines
A OneWorld partner, British Airways Avios are valuable in that they’re usable on a multitude of Airlines. In the US, they’re especially valuable for flights on American and Alaska Airlines.
British Airways mainline flights typically come with excessive taxes, fees and fuel surcharges. This substantially takes away from Avios redemption value on British Airways flights. The solution? Use your Avios miles on OneWorld partner airlines. The shorter the haul, the cheaper the Avios cost.
