This Lufthansa credit card review in 2015 is part of our travel deals series. A series of reviews aimed at exposing great travel deals like the Lufthansa Premier Miles & More Credit Card. Credit card offers like Lufthansa are great ways to maximize your points and miles balance and earn your way to free and or discounted award flights.
Earn 50,000 Bonus Miles with the Lufthansa Premier Miles & More Credit Card
Right now, Lufthansa is offering a 50,000 signup bonus with the Lufthansa Premier Miles & More credit card. This is actually a limited time offer over the typical 20,000 points this card usually offers. That said, this credit card is worth your consideration at this point in time. The Lufthansa Premier Miles & More Credit Card is a MasterCard issued by Barclaycard.
While 50,000 miles sounds great, there are a couple of relatively easy tasks you’ll need to complete before the total signup bonus can be snagged. Once you’re approved for the Lufthansa card, you’ll earn 20,000 miles when you make your first purchase. You can then earn another 30,000 bonus miles once you spend at least $5,000 on purchases during the first 3 months of being a Lufthansa card member. Note that the Lufthansa credit card comes with a $79 annual fee that’s not waived. If you utilize the full potential of this signup bonus, you’re essentially paying solely a $79 annual fee, sans any additional taxes and fees that may be incurred on award bookings, which includes United Airlines.
Also Earn 2x Miles Per Dollar Spent With the Lufthansa Credit Card
Earnings potential doesn’t just stop at the Lufthansa credit card signup bonus. You’ll earn 2x miles per dollar on all Miles & More affiliated airline partners. All other purchases with this card will net you 1 point per dollar spent.
Mileage Value with the Lufthansa Credit Card
Miles & More is the Lufthansa award mileage program. Typically, if you live in the US, domestic roundtrip flights can average around 25,000 miles. Conversely, you may be able to attain a roundtrip flight to Europe on Lufthansa for what this credit card signup bonus is worth at around 50,000 miles.
It’s also crucial to note that Lufthansa Miles & More cardmembers can not only redeem their miles on Lufthansa, but also with SWISS Air, Brussels, Austrian Airlines and Star Alliance airline partners. Star Alliance also includes United bookings, so if you don’t find value on Lufthansa routes or award bookings, make sure you review the Star Alliance award chart in detail.
While Lufthansa will typically give better award booking optionality to cardmembers, note that snagging and using award tickets on Lufthansa or through Star Alliance partners may incur additional taxes & fees. Especially when it comes to business class or premium seating. Some taxes and fees have been known to exceed $1000, so be very aware of the options you’re presented with before following through on an award booking. You can view Lufthansa and Star Alliance redemption options in detail at www.miles-and-more.com.
The Lufthansa Credit Card Comes with an Annual Companion Ticket
Have a friend or spouse you’d like to bring along on your travels? Lufthansa helps make that possible. This card will net you one economy class companion ticket simply after using your card once on a purchase after you’re approved. You’ll then earn a companion ticket each calendar year as long as you keep the credit card open. Note that you’ll need to make companion ticket bookings in advance, and you can do so by calling 1-866-461-5399. Note that taxes and fees will likely apply to both the cash or points purchased ticket as well as the companion ticket. Learn more about the Lufthansa credit card companion ticket details associated with the card at www.lufthansa-usa.com/companion.
Two other often overlooked perks with this credit card is the fact that it’s both a MasterCard with No Foreign Transaction Fees. MasterCard is accepted almost anywhere a credit card can be used world-wide. Being able to utilize a card that also comes with no foreign transaction fees is incredibly valuable if you’re a frequent international traveler.
Also Get your Free FICO Score from Barclaycard
Seeing that the Lufthansa Credit Card is a Barclaycard issued credit card, this issuer now also offers cardmembers access to their FICO Score. Your FICO credit score is a numerical credit score rating that is commonly used in many credit-based decisions. Note that this appears to be on an account by account basis, and not all consumers approved for the Lufthansa credit card may have access to their FICO Score via Barclaycard. As this is a relatively new benefit, we’re looking to hear from our readers on whether or not they’ve been given access, so feel free to let us know in the comments!
