Limited Time: Transfer Starwood Preferred Guest Starpoints to American Airlines AAdvantage for a 20% Bonus and an Additional 5,000 from Starwood
For a limited time, both American Airlines and Starwood have announced that you can transfer points from your Starwood Preferred Guest balance into American Airline’s AAdvantage program for a 20% bonus. In addition, Starwood, as always, offers an additional 5,000 points (miles) for every 20,000 points you transfer into a partner frequent flyer program. The additional 5,000 Starpoints is added automatically by the SPG program. Put simply, transferring just 20,000 Starpoints will net you a total of 30,000 AAdvantage miles with all things considered.
This Starwood and American Airlines transfer bonus was recently extended, and is set to last until August 31st, 2015. Starpoints can be tranferred at a 1:1 ratio with American Airlines AAdvatange miles. Here’s how the current valuation would break down assuming a 20,000 Starpoint transfer to American:
20,000 Starpoints = 20,000 AAdvantage miles
5,000 Standard SPG bonus = 5,000 AAdvantage miles
AAdvantage 20% mileage bonus = 5,000 AAdvantage miles
Total = 30,000 AAdvantage miles

Things to Remember for Starwood Preferred Guest Transfer Partners – Maximize Your Earning Potential
You can only transfer up to 79,999 Starpoints within a 24 hour period to a partner like American. So, assuming you were to transfer 79,999 points (which you shouldn’t do, and ill explain why in a moment), without the 20% bonus of this promotion and only Starwoods 5,000 bonus, you’d be transferring 94,999 Starpoints to American AAdvantage.
Now, points gurus know that you should maximize your point value when transferring out of Starwood. Since every 20,000 Starpoints nets you a 5,000 bonus, 79,999 – 60,000 falls 1 point short of a final 20,000 Starpoint transfer. Therefore, you should only transfer 60,000 Starpoints every 24 hours. This ensures you’ll attain the additional 5,000 for every 20,000 Starpoints transferred.
